Through close interaction with our children, staff are quick to pick up on their interests and ways of learning. We then plan our adult-led focus activities around these interests, to make learning fun for the children, and in a way that is in tune with their thinking. We are guided by the Early Years Outcomes to make best fit judgements about whether a child is showing typical development for his/her age, may be at risk of delay, or is ahead for his/her age. With this knowledge we can tailor activities to each child’s ability so that they are challenged at just the right level.
There are 7 areas of learning and development.
By building firm foundations in the three Prime Areas :
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
we can prepare children to extend their knowledge though the four Specific Areas:
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
The EYFS is a play based curriculum that recognises the holistic way in which young children learn, grow and develop. Emphasis is placed on the habits and attitudes towards learning that children develop through their early years education.
At St Peter’s Nursery, the children’s day is scaffolded upon a mixture of self-directed play and adult-led, planned activities to extend their learning and development. They are encouraged to experience a wide range of age appropriate resources, both inside and outdoors, that facilitate learning across all areas of the curriculum.
At St Peter’s Nursery we understand that early years education is the thin end of the wedge; if we can encourage children to be inquisitive, self confident and adopt a positive attitude to learning now, then we are satisfied that we have armed them with the tools to carve their future success in all their future endeavours.
